Anil Agarwal on Public-Infrastructure Bets

Project Nand Ghar, a flagship Anil Agarwal Foundation initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Women & Child Development, modernizes anganwadi centers across 14 states through 8,000 centres. The initiative targets health, nutrition and education improvements for 70 million children and 20 million women across India's 1.37 million anganwadi centres — a scale designed to match the problem.

The bullishness on Indian natural resources was unqualified: India imports 85% of its oil, all copper and all gold despite, in Agarwal's framing, having geology superior to China but producing only 6% of China's output. He estimated India's import drain at roughly $400 billion annually — money he argued should be circulating domestically if resources were properly opened.

Agarwal disclosed plans to invest Rs 30,000 crore in Cairn India and another Rs 15,000 crore across iron ore, copper, zinc and aluminium in two years. The strategic ambition: lift Cairn India's output from 230,000 barrels per day (30% of India's crude) to 350,000 bpd (50% of national production) — a stated goal of producing half of India's oil, hence the interview's headline.

Agarwal insisted that government and business must sit together to unlock India's natural resources, arguing that the country imports 85% of its oil and all of its copper and gold despite having the geology — and that India's exploration rate (3.5% of bauxite reserves) versus the West's 73% was an unacceptable missed opportunity he aimed to close.

Agarwal summarized his legacy aspiration simply: to open up India's natural resources, make the country self-sufficient, and create win-win structures with government that generate employment, improve education and recognize entrepreneurs. The framing positions Vedanta as a nation-building vehicle rather than a pure mining play, and explains his appetite for long-gestation, politically entangled projects.
