Nandan Nilekani on Outsourcing Strategy

Nandan Mohanrao Nilekani, born in Bangalore, is the Indian entrepreneur who co-founded Infosys and serves as its non-executive chairman. He returned to that post on 24 August 2017 after Vishal Sikka's exit, replacing the dual-chair structure of R Seshasayee and Ravi Venkatesan. As of late 2025 he was ranked the hundredth-richest person in India with a net worth of about three point two billion dollars.

At UIDAI, Nilekani launched Aadhaar — the world's largest biometric ID system — and UPI, India's real-time payments interface. Together they built the rails for an India-scale digital economy, reaching even the poorest villages through a deliberately interoperable open architecture.

In 1978 Nilekani started his career at Mumbai-based Patni Computer Systems, where he was interviewed by N.R. Narayana Murthy. Three years later, he, Murthy and five others left Patni to launch Infosys — a sequence that turned a job interview into the founding partnership of India's most globally visible IT firm.

Infosys's own profile frames Nilekani as the firm's co-founder and current chairman, who also served as founding chairman of UIDAI in the rank of cabinet minister from 2009 to 2014. Fortune named Nilekani Asia's Businessman of the Year in 2003; he received the Joseph Schumpeter prize in 2005 for innovative contributions in economics and politics; and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2006. TIME listed him among the world's hundred most influential people in both 2006 and 2009 — a recognition arc tracking the rise of Indian IT on the global stage.

TED2009 featured Nilekani shortly before his government pivot, framing him as the visionary co-founder of outsourcing pioneer Infosys who would help determine whether India could sustain its then-breakneck progress. The TED platform itself legitimated him as a global public intellectual, not just an Indian CEO.

TED's own framing emphasised that Nilekani had helped move India into the age of IT — a corporate legacy claim that, by being placed alongside his ideas-for-India talk, established a continuity between his Infosys work and his imminent public-sector assignment.

The TED framing — co-founder of an outsourcing pioneer explaining India's future — underscored the unusual dual credibility Nilekani carried: he could speak with authority on both private-sector scale and public-sector ambition. Few Indian founders have been able to occupy that intersection as credibly in the global conversation.
